Priya R was born and brought up in Chennai. Priya Rajan completed her schooling and graduated from Sri Kanyaka Parameswari Arts College for Women Chennai with M.com. Priya became interested in politics because of her father R Rajan, a ward-level DMK functionary, and her grandfather Chengai Sivam late former DMK MLA.

During her canvassing, Priya said solving the waterlogging problem is her top priority once becoming the mayor. This 28-year-old young woman previously won the counselor election in ward 74, Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar has become the third woman mayor of Chennai city. Notably, she is the first Dalit woman to become a mayor and is the first mayor from North Chennai.

She joined the DMK party at the age of 20. Since then she is working as hard as possible to help others. After Tara Cherian (1957-58) and Kamakshi Jayaraman (1971-72) Priya Rajan is the third young mayor in Chennai. Chief Minister MK Stalin choose Priya R as a mayor candidate because she is from North Chennai where waterlogging and sanitation are a problem.
